Kensington Secondary School takes every reasonable measure to provide students and staff with a safe and engaging working and learning environment. We seek to support our students in the most positive and effective manner to meet their individual needs.
A significant part of the work done at Kensington is devoted to assisting young people to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviour that will support them to be as independent as possible beyond their compulsory school years. Behaviour forms a substantial component of this effort and a considerable focus is placed on ensuring that appropriate personal and social behaviours are taught and supported. In those instances, where appropriate and/or dangerous behaviours are present, staff will make every reasonable attempt to bring about behaviour change. This is usually achieved through planned interventions using psychological principles and techniques based on evidence based research.
Typically, most behaviour change is able to be achieved using passive approaches over an extended period of time. In achieving these outcomes the school is able to seek the professional support of the School Psychology service, the School for Special Educational Needs Disability (SSEND) as well as external agencies and service providers. However, from time to time circumstances might arise where a student’s behaviour escalates to a point where they pose a risk to themselves and others. Under such circumstances staff have a legal obligation to respond in a manner that is reasonable and commensurate to the level of threat. In such circumstances the use of reasonable force is permitted to prevent physical harm to people and in some instances property. The school has a legal duty of care to provide people with a safe work environment and all reasonable steps must be taken to achieve this.
